Japan Slaps 20x Fee Hike on Permanent Residency in Immigration Shake-Up

Japan has increased its permanent residency application fee by 20 times, a significant hike aimed at managing the country's growing foreign population. The move is part of broader immigration policy changes introduced by the Japanese government. The fee hike is expected to affect thousands of foreign residents seeking long-term settlement in Japan.

Japan has raised the fee for permanent residency applications by 20 times, effective immediately, as part of a sweeping immigration policy overhaul. The drastic increase, announced by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, aims to manage the country's rapidly growing foreign population and streamline residency procedures.

The fee for permanent residency, which was previously 8,000 yen (approximately $55), has now been raised to 160,000 yen (around $1,100). This change comes amid a record increase in foreign residents, which surpassed 3 million in 2023. Officials state that the higher fee will cover administrative costs and ensure that only serious applicants pursue permanent residency. However, critics argue that the steep hike could deter legitimate long-term residents and exacerbate labor shortages in key sectors.

The policy shift is part of a broader strategy to balance Japan's demographic challenges with social integration. While the government emphasizes the need for sustainable immigration management, human rights groups and business leaders have expressed concerns about the impact on foreign workers and their families. The new fee structure is expected to take effect in the coming months, with further details on implementation to be released by the Immigration Services Agency.
