Congress Alleges ECINet Designed to Centralise BJP's Deletions, Additions of Voters

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that the Election Commission's ECINet app was designed to centralise all deletions and additions from BJP headquarters, citing a media report. The report quoted a security researcher who claimed to have warned the ECI and CERT-In in July about flaws in the voter-services website and ECINet app.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on [date] alleged that the Election Commission of India's ECINet application was designed to centralise all deletions and additions of voter data from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters. Sharing a screenshot of a media report on social media, Ramesh cited a security researcher who claimed to have warned the ECI and the country's cyber-security agency, CERT-In, in July about flaws in the Commission's voter-services website and its ECINet app.

The allegation comes amid ongoing concerns over the integrity of India's electoral rolls and data security. The security researcher's warning, if proven, would indicate that the ECI was aware of potential vulnerabilities in its digital infrastructure months before the current controversy. The ECI has not yet responded to these specific allegations, but has previously maintained that its systems are secure and that any claims of data manipulation are baseless.

The Congress party's accusation is likely to intensify the political battle over the credibility of India's election machinery ahead of the 2024 general elections. It raises questions about the ECI's handling of cyber-security threats and the transparency of its voter data management. The opposition is expected to demand a thorough investigation and greater oversight of the ECI's digital tools. The BJP has dismissed similar allegations in the past as politically motivated. The next steps may include calls for an independent audit of the ECINet system and increased scrutiny of the ECI's data practices.
