Calicut University Races to Launch Internship Portal for FYUGP Students

Calicut University is considering establishing an internship portal to facilitate mandatory internships for students under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). The university is evaluating various options to implement the portal effectively, aiming to enhance students' practical skills and employability.

Calicut University is deliberating on the creation of a dedicated internship portal to support students enrolled in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), as the varsity seeks to streamline internship placements. The move comes as part of the university's efforts to align with the National Education Policy's emphasis on experiential learning and skill development.

The FYUGP, introduced under the NEP 2020, mandates internships as a core component, requiring students to gain practical experience in their chosen fields. Calicut University, one of Kerala's largest affiliating universities with hundreds of affiliated colleges, is weighing options such as developing an in-house portal or partnering with existing platforms to manage the large-scale internship requirements. Officials have indicated that the portal would connect students with industry partners, but details regarding its scope, funding, and timeline are still under discussion.

The establishment of an internship portal could significantly enhance employability among graduates and strengthen industry-academia linkages. However, challenges such as ensuring quality internships, securing sufficient industry participation, and providing equitable access across urban and rural colleges remain. The university's decision will be closely watched by other institutions in Kerala and beyond, as they too navigate the implementation of NEP 2020's internship mandates.
