B.C. Teacher Banned 7 Years After Creep Catchers-Style Sting

A British Columbia teacher has been banned from teaching for seven years after being caught in a Creep Catchers-style sting operation. The teacher contacted someone he believed to be a teenager on Grindr, leading to a disciplinary hearing and decertification. The case highlights the growing role of civilian sting groups and the severe professional consequences for educators accused of inappropriate online conduct.

A British Columbia teacher has been banned from the profession for seven years after being caught in a Creep Catchers-style sting operation, according to a report by the Goldstream News Gazette. The teacher contacted an individual he believed to be a teenager on the dating app Grindr, only to discover he was communicating with members of a civilian vigilante group posing as a minor. The disciplinary action, handed down by the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch, bars the educator from holding a teaching certificate until at least 2032.

The case is the latest in a series involving so-called Creep Catchers groups, which use decoy profiles to expose adults seeking sexual contact with minors. While such stings have led to criminal charges and professional sanctions, they have also raised concerns about entrapment and the reliability of evidence gathered by untrained civilians. The B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch did not immediately release the teacher's name or the specific district where he worked, but confirmed that the seven-year ban is among the harshest penalties available short of a lifetime prohibition.

The decision underscores the increasing scrutiny of educators' online behavior and the growing influence of digital vigilante groups in policing sexual misconduct. It also raises questions about how school districts and regulators respond to allegations that originate outside formal law enforcement channels. The teacher has not indicated whether he will appeal the ruling, and the case may prompt further debate over the balance between child protection and due process in the digital age.
