Yankees Blunder: Austin Wells' Baserunning Gaffe Hands Rays 1-0 Win in ALDS Opener
In the opening game of the American League Division Series, a baserunning blunder by Yankees catcher Austin Wells proved costly in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The mistake erased a potential scoring opportunity and ultimately decided the pitcher's duel. The Yankees now trail the best-of-five series 1-0.
In a tense pitcher's duel at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, the New York Yankees fell 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, thanks in large part to a critical baserunning error by rookie catcher Austin Wells. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wells attempted to advance from first to third on a single but was thrown out by Rays left fielder Randy Arozarena, killing a potential rally.
The Yankees, who finished the regular season with the best record in the American League, managed only five hits against Rays starter Tyler Glasnow and the bullpen. The game's lone run came in the top of the sixth when Rays designated hitter Harold Ramírez singled home Wander Franco. Wells, a key midseason call-up, has been praised for his bat but has now made two costly baserunning mistakes in his last three games. "I've got to be smarter there," Wells said postgame. "That's on me. I was trying to make something happen, but it backfired."
The loss puts the Yankees in an early hole in the best-of-five series, with Game 2 set for Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. Manager Aaron Boone defended Wells but acknowledged the need for better situational awareness. "Austin's a smart player; he'll learn from this," Boone said. "But in playoff baseball, every out is magnified. We have to be better." The Rays, meanwhile, stole home-field advantage and will look to take a commanding 2-0 lead behind their ace, Shane McClanahan. The series shifts to Tropicana Field for Game 3 on Friday.
