UP's Fisheries Revolution: 80,000 Hectares of Ponds Leased, Production Doubles to 15.9 Lakh Tonnes

The Uttar Pradesh government has significantly expanded its fisheries sector by leasing over 80,000 hectares of Gram Sabha ponds and 2,205 kilometers of rivers, aiming to make fisheries a cornerstone of rural livelihoods. This initiative, part of a broader rural development strategy, has been implemented over the past eight years.

According to official data, fish production in the state has more than doubled from 6.29 lakh tonnes to 15.90 lakh tonnes during this period, representing a 153% increase. The government credits the leasing of community water bodies and river stretches for this growth, which has provided additional income streams for rural communities and strengthened the local aquaculture supply chain.

The move is expected to further boost rural employment and nutrition, with potential to inspire similar models in other Indian states. However, challenges such as sustainable fishing practices, water conservation, and equitable benefit-sharing among Gram Sabha members remain to be addressed as the program scales up.
