Tiruppur Kumaran, a young Indian revolutionary, died on January 10, 1932, in Tiruppur, Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu), after sustaining injuries from a police lathi charge during a protest against the British colonial government. He was carrying the Indian tricolor flag when he was attacked, and he clutched it until his last breath, becoming a potent symbol of defiance.

Kumaran was part of the Indian independence movement, which had intensified following the Civil Disobedience Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. The British authorities responded with brutal force, arresting thousands and cracking down on protests. Kumaran, then in his early twenties, was participating in a procession when police charged; he fell, but held the flag aloft. His death sparked outrage and inspired many more to join the freedom struggle. Historians note that his sacrifice exemplified the courage of ordinary Indians against imperial rule.

The legacy of Tiruppur Kumaran endures in India's collective memory. A statue stands in Tiruppur, and his story is taught in schools. His sacrifice, along with countless others, contributed to the eventual independence of India in 1947. As the nation commemorates its freedom fighters, Kumaran's name remains clear evidence of the price paid for liberty. The incident also highlights the often-overlooked contributions of regional activists in the national movement.
