A 32-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease was in critical condition aboard a Delhi-Aizawl IndiGo flight on October 3 when three Mizo doctors on board treated her after her oxygen level fell to around 40 per cent.
The woman, returning to Mizoram after treatment in Delhi, developed severe breathing difficulties about an hour before landing. Dr Benjamin Khiangte, Dr F Remthangpuii and Dr Willie Lalhruaitluanga responded to a call for medical help from the cabin crew. Former Union minister Dr Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad had initially attended to her.
The doctors administered oxygen, an inhaler and steroids. Her oxygen level briefly improved, allowing the flight to continue to Aizawl instead of diverting to Kolkata.
After landing at Lengpui, she was taken to Lengpui Community Health Centre and intubated before being shifted to LRM Hospital in Aizawl. She was put on a ventilator and underwent dialysis.
The woman was extubated later that night and was able to communicate, Dr Khiangte said.
“Had she not received medical support in time, the situation could have become very serious. I honestly did not expect her to survive,” he said.
The doctors said excess fluid in her lungs had worsened her breathing.
