Six Flags Shuts Down X2 Rollercoaster After Over 100 Alleged Brain Injuries

Six Flags has shut down the X2 rollercoaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain after more than 100 people alleged brain injuries from riding the spinning-seat coaster. The closure follows a wave of lawsuits and safety complaints, prompting an investigation into the ride's design and operation.

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation has temporarily closed the X2 rollercoaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, after more than 100 individuals came forward alleging brain injuries sustained while riding the attraction. The ride, known for its 360-degree spinning seats, was shut down earlier this week pending a comprehensive safety review.

The allegations, which have emerged over several months, include claims of concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and persistent cognitive issues. Legal representatives for the claimants argue that the ride's intense rotational forces and abrupt movements pose a significant risk to riders. Six Flags has stated that it is cooperating with an internal investigation and has not commented on the specifics of the pending litigation. The X2, which opened in 2002 as the world's first fourth-dimensional rollercoaster, has a history of safety-related incidents, including a 2007 incident that resulted in a fatality.

The closure has sparked broader concerns about amusement park ride safety and the adequacy of current regulations. Consumer advocacy groups are calling for stricter oversight and independent testing of high-intensity rides. Six Flags faces potential financial and reputational damage as it navigates the growing number of lawsuits and public scrutiny. The company has not announced a timeline for reopening the ride or the findings of its investigation.
