PNP readies free rides, deploys cops as transport strikes begin

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday, Sept. 28, rolled out assistance measures for passengers expected to face difficulties in getting to work, school, and other destinations as separate transport protests started this week. Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP chief, ordered police units to increase their presence in transport terminals, major roads, convergence areas, and other locations where large numbers of passengers are expected during the protest actions. “Our police units are prepared to maintain peace and order while providing assistance to commuters who may be affected by the transport strike,” Nartatez said. The PNP said its existing “Libreng Sakay” initiatives will be mobilized in coordination with local authorities to help passengers affected by the transport disruptions. Meanwhile, Nartatez said police personnel assigned to the operations must remain professional and respect the rights of those participating in the strike. “We recognize the right to peaceful expression, and we will also protect commuters, motorists, drivers, transport workers, and the general public,” he said. The PNP chief also appealed to the public to remain patient and seek police assistance when needed. Transport group MANIBELA began a three-day transport strike Monday to protest rising fuel prices, with jeepney drivers, operators and other protesters gathering at University Avenue in Quezon City before proceeding to Philcoa. MANIBELA chairperson Mar Valbuena estimated that 20,000 to 25,000 jeepney drivers from various Metro Manila routes would join the strike. The group also posted photos of passengers it said were stranded due to the lack of available jeepneys. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) earlier warned operators that they could face sanctions for failing to provide required services during the strike. Acting LTFRB Chairperson Greg Pua Jr. said violators may first receive a show-cause order and a fine of at least P5,000 for a first offense. Succeeding violations could lead to suspension and eventual cancellation of their franchise. PISTON is also set to hold a separate nationwide strike on Sept. 29 and 30 which would be participated in by an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 drivers and operators, according to the group.
