The Madras High Court on Monday declined to grant interim relief to former DMK Minister E.V. Velu and his son in connection with a lake bed excavation case. Justice V. Lakshminarayanan ordered notice to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on petitions filed by the two accused seeking to quash the First Information Report (FIR) registered against them. The notice is returnable by November 6, delaying any immediate reprieve for the high-profile accused.

The case pertains to alleged illegal excavation on lake beds, a sensitive environmental and corruption issue in Tamil Nadu. The DVAC had registered an FIR against Velu and his son following allegations of unauthorized sand mining and excavation activities. The petitioners argued that the FIR was politically motivated and lacked merit, but the court's refusal to grant interim relief means the investigation will proceed for now. The case has drawn attention due to Velu's stature as a former minister and the DMK's stance on anti-corruption.

The court's decision is a setback for Velu and his son, who now face continued legal scrutiny. It also underscores the judiciary's role in checking alleged misuse of power. The DVAC is expected to file its counter-affidavit by the next hearing date. The outcome could have political ramifications, especially as Tamil Nadu remains a key state in national politics. Observers will watch whether the case proceeds to trial or if the FIR is quashed. The next hearing on November 6 will be crucial in determining the course of the investigation.
