Lucid's EV Production Plummets to 2-Year Low as Demand Crisis Deepens

Lucid Motors has deliberately reduced its electric vehicle production to the lowest level in almost two years, citing persistent struggles to generate mass-market demand. The move underscores the challenges facing the EV startup as it attempts to navigate a cooling market and ramp up its Air sedan sales.

Lucid Motors reported a significant decline in electric vehicle production for the latest quarter, with output falling to its lowest level in nearly two years. The company produced just 1,550 vehicles in the second quarter of 2024, down from 2,173 in the previous quarter and a steep drop from the 3,493 produced in the same period last year. The decline comes as Lucid deliberately scales back manufacturing at its Arizona factory in response to weaker-than-expected demand for its luxury Air sedan.

The production cut reflects Lucid's ongoing struggle to find mass-market appeal for its high-priced EVs, which start at around $70,000. Despite praise for its technology and performance, the company has faced headwinds including high interest rates, increased competition from Tesla and legacy automakers, and a broader slowdown in EV sales growth. In a statement, Lucid said it is "taking deliberate steps to align production with demand" and expects to produce approximately 9,000 vehicles in 2024, a target it reaffirmed. The company also recently announced a $1.5 billion investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which remains its majority shareholder.

The production slowdown raises questions about Lucid's ability to achieve profitability and scale in an increasingly crowded EV market. Analysts note that while the company's cash reserves provide some runway, it must demonstrate sustained demand to justify its valuation. The news comes amid a broader industry trend of automakers adjusting EV production plans, with Ford, GM, and Tesla also reporting slower growth. Lucid's shares fell slightly in pre-market trading following the report. The company is expected to provide further details during its second-quarter earnings call next month.
