In a significant political development ahead of the Bihar Legislative Council elections, rebel MLAs from the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) have decided to support a candidate put forward by the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), defying the party line. The decision, announced by rebel MLA Anand Madhav, was taken out of "respect" for party workers, according to Madhav. The rebel MLAs, however, maintained that they remain with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The JD(U), a key ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the NDA, is now facing internal dissent that could impact its electoral prospects in the MLC polls. The RLM, led by Upendra Kushwaha, is also an NDA partner, making the rebellion a complex intra-alliance issue. Madhav's statement underscores the growing factionalism within the JD(U) and the challenges of managing coalition dynamics in Bihar.

The development is likely to have ramifications for the NDA's unity in Bihar, especially with the MLC elections seen as a precursor to future electoral battles. The JD(U) leadership has yet to respond officially, but the rebel MLAs' move could force a renegotiation of seat-sharing arrangements within the alliance. Political observers are closely watching whether this dissent will escalate or be resolved through dialogue, as the NDA seeks to present a united front.
