Israelis gathered at memorials across the country on Monday to mark the first anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in 250 others being taken hostage. The commemorations began at the exact time the assault started, with sirens and moments of silence observed at sites including the Nova music festival and kibbutzim near the Gaza border.

The attack, described as the deadliest single day for Jews since the Holocaust, triggered a massive Israeli military response in Gaza. According to Palestinian health officials, more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ensuing war, which has also displaced the vast majority of Gaza's 2.3 million residents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation, vowing to continue the fight until all hostages are returned and Hamas is dismantled.

The anniversary comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Israel engaged in a multi-front conflict against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and facing threats from Iran. International calls for a ceasefire have intensified, but negotiations remain stalled. The day's events underscored the deep divisions within Israeli society over the government's handling of the war and the fate of the remaining hostages, as families of captives renewed their demands for a deal.
