Godavari water to flow 24x7 in Vizag's Madhurawada by 2025 under ₹725-crore project

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a ₹725-crore project to supply 24x7 Godavari water to Madhurawada in Visakhapatnam, with work likely to begin in October. The project will transport water from Yeleru to the Mudasarlova reservoir, serving 2.5 lakh people in the first phase and reducing pressure on the Gosthani river source.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a ₹725-crore project to provide 24x7 Godavari water to Madhurawada, a rapidly growing suburb of Visakhapatnam. Work on the project is expected to commence in October, with water to be transported from Yeleru to the Mudasarlova reservoir. In its first phase, the scheme will serve approximately 2.5 lakh residents, significantly improving water availability in the region.

The project aims to ease the burden on the Gosthani river, which currently supplies water to Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas. The Gosthani has been under increasing stress due to rapid urbanization and industrial demand. By tapping into the Godavari, authorities hope to secure a more reliable and sustainable water source for the city's expanding population. The ₹725-crore investment underscores the government's focus on infrastructure development in the region.

Once completed, the project is expected to boost real estate and economic activity in Madhurawada, which hosts several educational institutions and IT companies. It also aligns with broader efforts to enhance urban amenities in Visakhapatnam, a key smart city. Local residents and businesses have welcomed the move, though some experts caution that timely execution and proper maintenance will be crucial to realizing the full benefits. The next steps include finalizing contracts and initiating construction, with the first phase targeted for completion within a stipulated timeframe.
