Germany's automotive market expanded by 9 percent in September 2026, with new electric car registrations nearly doubling compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption was the main driver behind the overall market growth.

The KBA figures show that new EV registrations were twice as high as in September 2025, underscoring a rapid shift toward electrification in Europe's largest auto market. While the overall market grew by 9 percent, the EV segment's near-doubling highlights changing consumer preferences and possibly the impact of government incentives or new model launches. The data compares September 2026 with September 2025, providing a year-on-year snapshot.

The strong EV performance could signal a tipping point for Germany's automotive industry, which has been investing heavily in electric mobility. If the trend continues, it may accelerate the transition away from internal combustion engines and influence policy decisions on charging infrastructure and emissions targets. Stakeholders, including automakers and policymakers, will be watching upcoming monthly data to see if this growth is sustained.
