Florida health officials have reported more than 250 locally acquired cases of dengue fever this year, making it the largest outbreak in the continental United States in several decades. The vast majority of cases have been concentrated in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, life-threatening complications. The current outbreak surpasses previous local transmission events in Florida and other Gulf Coast states, raising concerns about the expanding range of disease-carrying mosquitoes. State health officials are urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites and to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.

The outbreak highlights the growing threat of tropical diseases in the continental U.S., potentially linked to climate change and increased travel. Public health experts are calling for enhanced surveillance and vector control measures. Local authorities are ramping up mosquito control efforts and public awareness campaigns to contain the spread.
