Empty Desks in Greece: One Teacher, Two Students, and a Continent's Demographic Cliff

The last school on the remote Greek island of Kalamos has just two sixth-grade students and will close next year when they leave for mainland middle school, leaving the classroom mothballed. The closure is a stark local example of a demographic crisis sweeping rural Europe, where falling birth rates and youth migration are emptying schools and threatening community survival.

On the remote Greek island of Kalamos, teacher Chryssa Ntalaka began the school year on September 23 with just two sixth-grade students in her classroom, surrounded by rows of empty desks. When those two pupils leave for middle school on the mainland next year, the island's last remaining school will be mothballed, its shelves still lined with toys and picture books.

The closure is the latest symptom of a demographic crisis unfolding across rural Europe. As birth rates decline and young families migrate to urban centers for work and services, remote communities are losing their schools, the traditional anchors of village life. Greece has seen hundreds of small schools shut in recent years, mirroring trends in Spain, Italy, and Portugal, where shrinking populations threaten the viability of rural regions.

The loss of a school often accelerates depopulation, as families with children are deterred from settling in areas without educational facilities. While local officials have called for incentives to keep young families on islands like Kalamos, the broader challenge requires coordinated European policies on rural development, childcare, and economic opportunity. Without such measures, analysts warn, more classrooms will fall silent, leaving behind aging communities and abandoned infrastructure.
