Chennai's Virugambakkam Canal Storm-Water Drain to Be Ready in 2 Weeks, Says GCC Commissioner

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran on Tuesday inspected the ongoing construction of a storm-water drain near the Virugambakkam canal in Chennai. The project, estimated at ₹30 crore, includes the construction of retaining walls and the removal of silt and waste. Officials said the work is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The inspection comes as part of the GCC's efforts to enhance the city's drainage infrastructure ahead of the monsoon season. The Virugambakkam canal has historically been prone to flooding, causing inconvenience to residents. The ₹30 crore project aims to mitigate these issues by improving water flow and preventing blockages. Commissioner Sameeran reviewed the progress and instructed officials to expedite the work without compromising quality.

The completion of this project is expected to provide relief to residents in and around Virugambakkam, who have long demanded better drainage facilities. It also aligns with the GCC's broader plan to upgrade storm-water drains across Chennai.
