Chennai Port Radar Overhaul: IMD to Replace Aging System by 2027, Adds Four New Units in Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will replace the aging weather radar at Chennai Port in 2027 and install four new radars across Tamil Nadu. The new units will be located in Yercaud, Trichy, Kanyakumari, and Ramanathapuram, enhancing weather monitoring and early warning capabilities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced plans to replace the aging weather radar at Chennai Port by 2027, while also adding four new radar units across Tamil Nadu. The new radars will be installed in Yercaud, Trichy, Kanyakumari, and Ramanathapuram, according to an official statement. This move aims to strengthen the state's weather monitoring network and improve early warning systems for cyclones and other extreme weather events.

The existing radar at Chennai Port has been in operation for over a decade and requires an upgrade to meet modern standards. The four new radars are part of IMD's broader effort to expand its radar network across the country, particularly in coastal regions prone to cyclones. Tamil Nadu, with its long coastline, is highly vulnerable to cyclonic storms, and the enhanced radar coverage will provide more accurate and timely forecasts. An IMD official stated that the new radars will significantly improve the detection of weather systems and aid in disaster preparedness.

The upgrade is expected to benefit not only Tamil Nadu but also neighboring states and union territories. Improved radar data will enhance the accuracy of weather models, leading to better warnings for fishermen, farmers, and the general public. The project is part of the government's push to modernize meteorological infrastructure and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The new radars are slated for installation by 2027, with the Chennai Port radar replacement also scheduled for completion in the same year. This development underscores the growing importance of technology in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
