Brazil's presidential election is headed to a runoff after the first round delivered major gains for incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, defying pre-election polls that had predicted a clear victory for leftist challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Brazil is heading into a fiercely contested presidential runoff after the first round of voting on Sunday revealed major gains for incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, defying pre-election polls that had suggested a comfortable lead for his leftist rival, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. With nearly all votes counted, the results showed Lula with a narrower-than-expected lead, forcing the race into a second round scheduled for October 30.

Bolsonaro's strong performance, particularly in key battleground states, exceeded pollster expectations and underscored the resilience of his support base. The first round saw record turnout, with voters casting ballots amid a deeply polarized political climate. Both candidates now face a two-week sprint to court undecided voters and secure alliances with eliminated candidates. Lula, who served as president from 2003 to 2010, had led in most polls by double digits, but Bolsonaro's late surge has upended those predictions.

The runoff outcome will have significant implications for Brazil's domestic policies, including the Amazon rainforest, economic reforms, and social programs, as well as for its international relations. Global markets reacted with volatility as investors weighed the possibility of a Bolsonaro comeback. The second round is expected to be one of the most divisive in Brazil's history, with both candidates vowing to fight until the end. International observers, including the Organization of American States, have called for a peaceful and transparent process.
