Bank Branches Open Sunday as Customers Rush to Beat 3-Day Strike

Banks across India opened on Sunday to handle a surge in customer transactions ahead of a three-day nationwide bank strike. The strike, called by bank unions over unresolved wage and service issues, is expected to halt operations from Monday. Sunday's brisk turnout reflects public anxiety over cash and cheque clearances during the shutdown.

Banks across India opened their branches on Sunday, drawing brisk customer turnout as depositors and borrowers rushed to complete transactions ahead of a three-day nationwide bank strike beginning Monday. The strike, called by major bank unions, is set to disrupt clearing operations, cash withdrawals, and loan services across the country.

The unions have announced the strike over long-pending demands related to wage revision and service conditions. With Monday through Wednesday expected to see shuttered branches, customers queued at Sunday-open locations to deposit cheques, withdraw cash, and settle urgent payments. Bank officials said Sunday operations were extended to mitigate the impact, though digital and ATM services may also be affected depending on participation.

The strike is likely to strain liquidity for businesses and individuals reliant on branch banking, with the Reserve Bank of India and bank managements monitoring the situation. If the standoff continues, further disruptions could follow, and negotiations between unions and the Indian Banks' Association are being watched for a possible resolution.
