Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman launched a digital payment campaign at AGB Colony Kitchen Market in Dhaka on October 5, organized by IFIC Bank under a central bank initiative to expand digital payments and promote Bangla QR. The campaign aims to encourage merchants and consumers to adopt digital transactions, advancing the country's cashless economy goals.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman on Saturday, October 5, visited the AGB Colony Kitchen Market in Motijheel, Dhaka, to inaugurate a special campaign organized by IFIC Bank PLC aimed at expanding digital payments across Bangladesh and promoting the use of Bangla QR. The event, which began at 9am, is part of a broader central bank initiative to drive the adoption of digital transactions at the grassroots level.
The campaign underscores Bangladesh Bank's ongoing efforts to build a cashless society, with Bangla QR serving as a key interoperable payment system. By targeting kitchen markets, where cash transactions dominate, the initiative seeks to bring small merchants and everyday consumers into the digital payment ecosystem. Governor Rahman's direct participation highlights the central bank's commitment to accelerating financial inclusion and reducing reliance on cash.
The success of such campaigns could significantly boost digital transaction volumes, enhance transparency, and stimulate economic growth. However, challenges remain, including merchant onboarding, digital literacy, and infrastructure readiness. The central bank is expected to continue similar outreach programs nationwide, with IFIC Bank and other financial institutions playing a pivotal role in implementation.
