A Remarkable Milestone in Cardiac Care: Abbott AVEIR Leadless Pacemaker Successfully Implanted
Aizawl 7th October,2026: The first Abbott AVEIR VR Leadless Pacemaker implantation in Mizoram was successfully performed at Civil Hospital, Aizawl by Dr. Loncy V. Lalzarliana, Dr. Isak Lallawmkima, and their team, under the supervision of Dr. Uday Shankar Das from Apollo Multispeciality Hospital, Kolkata.
Unlike conventional pacemakers—which require surgical incision of the chest, creating a subcutaneous pocket beneath the skin, and threading electrical leads through veins—a leadless pacemaker is introduced directly into the heart via a catheter through the groin (femoral vein). Because it eliminates the need for chest incisions, surgical pockets, and transvenous leads, the procedure is significantly less invasive.
The patient is a 67-year-old pensioner. The procedure was carried out at Civil Hospital, Aizawl under the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS).
Furthermore, while traditional surgically implanted pacemakers typically have a battery life of around 9 to 11 years, this Abbott leadless pacemaker boasts an extended longevity of over 18 to 21+ years.
This historic achievement demonstrates that the Cardiology Department of Civil Hospital, Aizawl is now capable of providing advanced cardiac care, marking a new chapter in the treatment of heart conditions within the state.
