Uzbekistan Strikes Major Gas-Condensate Discovery in Ustyurt
Uzbekistan has discovered a new gas-condensate field, Qoratau, in the central Ustyurt region following exploration drilling that identified commercially significant deposits in deep Lower Jurassic formations. The find, announced by state-owned Uzbekneftegaz, is located in the Muynak district and could bolster the country's hydrocarbon reserves.
Uzbekistan has discovered a new gas-condensate field, named Qoratau, in the central part of the Ustyurt region, state-owned energy company Uzbekneftegaz announced on October 5. The discovery follows exploration drilling that identified commercially important natural gas and condensate deposits in deep Lower Jurassic formations. The field is located in the Muynak district of the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan.
Uzbekneftegaz said the find confirms the hydrocarbon potential of deep Jurassic plays in the Ustyurt plateau, a region that has seen increased exploration activity in recent years. While no reserve estimates were immediately provided, the discovery could add to Uzbekistan's proven gas reserves, which stand at around 1.8 trillion cubic meters. The company has not yet disclosed a timeline for appraisal drilling or production start-up.
The discovery aligns with Uzbekistan's efforts to attract foreign investment and boost domestic energy output amid rising demand. If commercially developed, the Qoratau field could enhance the country's energy security and export capacity, particularly to neighboring markets. Analysts will be watching for further details on reserve size and development plans, which could impact regional gas markets and investment flows.
