Trump Unveils $6.6bn Baltimore Shipyard Owned by GOP Mega-Donor's Defense Firm

Donald Trump announced a new $6.6bn shipbuilding factory in Baltimore, partly funded by the US government but owned by Anduril Industries, the defense firm founded by major Republican donor Palmer Luckey. The project at the unused Sparrows Point shipyard boosts a politically connected company whose founder has given $5.9m to Republican causes since 2017 and hosted fundraisers for at least 20 GOP politicians, including Trump.

Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the opening of a new $6.6bn shipbuilding factory at the currently unused Sparrows Point shipyard in Baltimore, a project partly funded by the US government but owned by Anduril Industries, the defense company founded by Palmer Luckey.

The announcement is a significant boost for Anduril, whose founder is a major Republican campaign fundraiser. Luckey has hosted campaign fundraisers for at least 20 Republican politicians, including Trump, and has given $5.9m to Republican causes since 2017, according to Guardian reporting. The arrangement raises questions about the intersection of public funding and private ownership by a politically connected firm.

The project's implications extend to defense procurement, government spending oversight, and the growing influence of donor-linked companies in national security infrastructure. Next steps include scrutiny of the funding terms and congressional reaction, as well as how the Baltimore facility fits into broader US shipbuilding and defense industrial base goals.
