The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Telangana has issued a directive to district election authorities to take legal action against individuals who submit false statements in voter application forms—specifically Forms 6, 6A, 7, and 8. The order, aimed at safeguarding the accuracy of the electoral roll, comes as part of heightened efforts to prevent fraudulent registrations and deletions ahead of upcoming elections.

Forms 6 and 6A are used for new voter registration and overseas voters, while Forms 7 and 8 are for objections to inclusion and corrections to entries, respectively. Making false statements in these forms is a punishable offense under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The CEO's directive emphasizes that officials must verify claims and initiate action against violators, though specific cases or numbers were not disclosed. This move aligns with the Election Commission of India's broader push for clean electoral rolls.

The directive is expected to deter fraudulent practices and bolster public confidence in the electoral process. Political parties have often accused each other of manipulating voter lists, and this action could intensify scrutiny. The CEO's office has urged citizens to provide accurate information, warning of consequences for misrepresentation. As elections approach, the effectiveness of this crackdown will be closely monitored by stakeholders.
