NRI Deposits Skyrocket 678% to $36.24 Billion in April-July FY27

Inflows into NRI deposit schemes surged by 678.2% year-on-year to $36.24 billion during April-July of FY27, compared to $4.66 billion in the same period last year, according to RBI data. The massive jump indicates a significant boost in foreign exchange inflows, likely driven by attractive interest rates and economic factors.

In a striking surge, inflows into Non-Resident Indian (NRI) deposit schemes skyrocketed by 678.2% year-on-year to $36.24 billion during the April-July period of the fiscal year 2026-27, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This compares to just $4.66 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, marking an unprecedented increase in foreign exchange inflows through NRI deposits.

The RBI data highlights a massive boost in NRI deposits, which include Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits, Non-Resident External (NRE) deposits, and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) deposits. The surge is likely driven by a combination of factors, including attractive interest rates offered on these deposits, a stable Indian rupee, and global economic uncertainties prompting NRIs to park funds in Indian banks. The central bank's data underscores the growing confidence of the Indian diaspora in the domestic banking system.

This substantial inflow of foreign exchange could have significant implications for India's external sector, potentially bolstering the country's foreign exchange reserves and providing support to the rupee. However, analysts caution that such a sharp increase may also reflect transient factors, and sustained inflows will depend on the interest rate differential and global economic conditions. The RBI is expected to monitor these flows closely to ensure financial stability. Next steps may include policy measures to sustain these inflows while managing potential volatility.
