Monsoon Mayhem: Telangana Faces 17% Rain Deficit, 38% Drop from 2025

The Southwest Monsoon 2026 has ended in Telangana with a 17% deficient rainfall, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The season, which typically spans June to September, recorded a 38% lower rainfall compared to the previous year, exacerbating concerns for agriculture and water resources in the region.

The shortfall was consistent across all four months of the monsoon season, with the impact unevenly distributed across Telangana. Official figures indicate that some districts experienced severe deficits while others fared slightly better, though no area recorded surplus rainfall. The IMD had earlier forecast a near-normal monsoon for the state, but changing weather patterns and the El Niño effect may have contributed to the shortfall.

The deficient rainfall is likely to affect kharif crop sowing, particularly rice, cotton, and maize, and could lead to a drinking water crisis in several districts. The state government is expected to announce relief measures and may seek central assistance.
