Kerala CM Slams CPI(M) for 'Demonising' Malappuram, Demands Apology

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has demanded an apology from the CPI(M) for allegedly seeking to demonise the Muslim-majority Malappuram district. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of adopting Sangh Parivar tactics to appeal to right-wing Hindu nationalist voters by disparaging minorities.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on [date] demanded an apology from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for what he described as attempts to "demonise" the Muslim-majority Malappuram district. The demand came after opposition leader V.D. Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of borrowing from the Sangh Parivar's playbook, alleging that the party was engaging in dog-whistle politics to appease right-wing Hindu nationalist voters by disparaging minority communities.

The controversy erupted following remarks by CPI(M) leaders that were perceived as targeting Malappuram, a district with a significant Muslim population. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, claimed that the CPI(M) was deliberately stoking communal divisions to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) growing influence in the state. He cited recent statements by CPI(M) figures that he said were aimed at polarising voters along religious lines. The CPI(M) has not yet officially responded to the demand for an apology.

The exchange underscores the increasingly fraught political landscape in Kerala, where the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) are vying for minority support ahead of upcoming elections. The accusation that the CPI(M) is adopting Hindutva tactics could damage its secular credentials and alienate Muslim voters, a key constituency. National attention is now focused on whether the CPI(M) will address these allegations, as the incident may set a precedent for political discourse in the state and beyond.
