Northern Railway’s Jammu Division is expanding the use of solar energy across its railway stations and premises, with the total installed solar power capacity set to rise to 2.55 MW following the commissioning of 18 new solar plants.

At present, solar plants with a combined capacity of 1,745 KWp (1.745 MW) are operational at five major railway locations in the division. These include facilities at Jammu Railway Station, including the platforms, Booking Office and Parcel House, besides a 1 MW solar plant at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station.

The division is now expediting work on 18 additional solar plants with a combined capacity of 808 KWp. Once commissioned, the total solar power generation capacity will reach 2,553 KWp (2.55 MW).

Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer Vishal Rathi said work on a new 450 KWp solar plant at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station commenced on September 12, 2026, and is scheduled for completion by December. Work on 13 solar plants with a combined capacity of 358 KWp at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur Station is also expected to begin shortly.

The expansion of solar power is expected to help the Railways reduce carbon emissions significantly while saving lakhs of rupees annually on electricity bills. The savings, according to the division, can subsequently be utilised for improving passenger amenities.

Solar generation will also help reduce dependence on the conventional power grid and strengthen energy self-reliance at railway premises.

Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar said the initiative was aimed at promoting a clean, green and sustainable railway system. He said the division plans to progressively illuminate railway stations with solar energy and strengthen its commitment towards environmental protection.
