India-Myanmar Defence Dialogue Moves to Guwahati as Border Security Fears Mount

The third edition of the India-Myanmar defence dialogue will be held in Guwahati, Assam, marking the first time the bilateral talks are hosted in Northeast India. The decision to move the talks to the region underlines New Delhi's growing focus on security challenges along the 1,643-km India-Myanmar border, which spans Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.

The dialogue, which follows two previous rounds held in New Delhi and Naypyidaw, is expected to address cross-border insurgency, arms and drug trafficking, and the influx of refugees fleeing Myanmar's ongoing civil conflict. Officials said the Guwahati venue signals India's intent to prioritise the Northeast in its Act East policy and to strengthen coordination with Myanmar's military junta on border management. The meeting comes amid reports of increased movement of insurgent groups and undocumented migrants across the porous border.

The outcome of the talks will be closely watched by regional stakeholders, including China, which has deep economic and strategic interests in Myanmar. India has been walking a tightrope between engaging the junta and upholding democratic norms, while also managing pressure from Northeast states to fence the border and curb illegal immigration. The defence dialogue is expected to produce agreements on joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and infrastructure development along the border. Next steps include a follow-up meeting between border guarding forces and possible visits by Indian defence officials to Myanmar's border regions.
