Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) affiliated with the All India United Trade Union Centre staged a protest in front of the Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer’s office in Karwar on Tuesday, demanding a minimum monthly remuneration of ₹15,000 and timely payment of incentives and honorarium. The demonstration is part of a State-wide protest week across Karnataka, highlighting the growing unrest among ASHA workers over inadequate compensation and delayed payments.

ASHA workers are the backbone of India’s rural healthcare system, serving as the first point of contact for communities and playing a critical role in maternal and child health, immunisation, and health awareness. Despite their essential contributions, many receive meager honorariums that often fall below minimum wage standards, with incentives frequently delayed. The demand for a fixed monthly remuneration of ₹15,000 reflects longstanding grievances over financial insecurity and lack of formal recognition as government employees.

The protest in Karwar is part of a broader movement across Karnataka, where ASHA workers have been demanding better pay and working conditions. If unaddressed, the agitation could disrupt primary healthcare services in rural areas. The state government has yet to respond to the demands, but the escalating protests underscore the urgent need for policy intervention to ensure fair compensation for these frontline health workers. The outcome of these protests could set a precedent for ASHA workers nationwide, who face similar challenges.
